Seven years after the mysterious crash that erased his memory, Stoney Calhoun resumed his peaceful existence of fishing guide, shared between the store of the beautiful Kate Balaban and his isolated cabin in the woods of Maine. Until, on an uninhabited island in Casco Bay, he discovers a completely charred corpse. Shortly after, the client who accompanied murdered. Despite his misgivings, Calhoun is drawn into the investigation of the sheriff Dickman and his old reflexes coming back. Casco Bay, the second adventure of Stoney Calhoun takes us once again in the seascapes of Maine who leave gradually resurface the ghosts of a past threat.
It is paradoxical to say, but I just read a thriller quiet quiet, relaxing. A real thriller, because there is a corpse, even more, and suspense that keeps you until the end. And yet, and it's the whole point of this book is that it does not come out breathless, bloodless, fingers clutching the pages, the beating heart ready to break ... .... No, I closed the book reluctantly, but rested with the impression of having taken a breath of fresh sea air, have enjoyed every piece of nature's book author whose beautiful descriptions.
Our characters are also soothing. Calhoun is the most endearing. I see it as a veteran a little gruff with a soft heart, holed up in his cabin, the first part of life escapes him, and has a healthy green again, organizing fishing trips in Casco Bay. His spaniel Ralph, follows like a shadow, its pervasiveness in the novel is obvious. From the first pages, I noticed the almost carnal relationship , anyway subsidiary between solitary fond of music and his dog. A guy who loves his dog and the music can only be a good guy.
"For him music was not just a background, the play it deserved, even valid with only one ear. "
Mr tapply proves here that polar and beautiful writing are not incompatible. In this region far from the tumult of cities rand, and its troubled banking and disreputable places, the language is treated. The pace is not the same either. We do not rush, take the time to live and enjoy every moment. Sheriff Dickman is also quiet, but very effective, and persuasive. The survey is conducted to the rhythm of nature, without falling into apathy nor sentimentality. I do not like the soft or slow, and I rigged the author for having spared me the trouble and purring through the mix of beauty, excitement, tenderness, adrenaline, and disorientation.
"About two hundred yards away, a flock of birds, gulls, gulls and terns, had appeared in the damp fog where, a minute ago, there was nothing. They circled, then regrouped plunged into the gray water, and other birds on the wing approached from all directions. Their raucous screams and squeals filled the air and, just below, Calhoun saw the splashes and swirls caused by hundreds of ferocious bluefish. They circled a school of small fish completely panicked, and the birds rushed to retrieve the remains of bloody flesh. There before our eyes, Calhoun thought, that's all condensed into Darwin "
few months ago, when my plane about to arrive, flying over the Gulf of Maine, the weather was clear, the unobstructed view, and it gave off an impression of serenity, seen from above. I thought it might be good to go sit there, just below ... .. Mr tapply, me just refreshed his memory, and gave a sudden urge to escape.
